Welcome
The local committee is pleased to welcome the participants of the 5th EVCBMAW which will take place on 19th-20th October 2023 in Pisa, a small Italian city on a human and animal scale, rich in history, culture and science. In fact, the birth of the University of Pisa, which you will find widespread and integrated in the city, in whose streets tourists mingle with students, dates back to 1343.
Pisa is the city of the Leaning Tower, a renowned symbol of Italy, a singular example of a mistake turned into a masterpiece in the magnificent casket of Piazza dei Miracoli. Pisa is also the city of Galileo Galilei, considered the father of modern science, who introduced the scientific method. We hope the atmosphere of the town will make the experience even more enjoyable.
The two days of the 5th EVCBMAW will be full of food for thought on the main theme chosen for this year: the human-animal bond. As well as an opportunity for growth, it will also be an opportunity to meet old acquaintances and new colleagues who, like us and you, are interested in the all-round welfare of non-human animals.
As always, there will be a college study day (BM & AWSEL, 18th October) and this year, after the congress (21st October), we invite you to participate in a satellite meeting with a somewhat unusual approach.
We hope to welcome all of you in Pisa and we thank since now all those who will work and are already working to make this congress a success (local, international and scientific committee), as well as those who will contribute with their abstracts and participation.

Mike Mendl – ‘Optimism’ and ‘pessimism’ as markers of animal emotion, welfare and (perhaps) vulnerability to behaviour problems.
Mike obtained his PhD in animal behaviour at Cambridge University. He then took a Royal Society European Research Fellowship to continue his work on behavioural development at Groningen University in the Netherlands, before returning to work at Cambridge University Vet School where he moved into the field of applied animal behaviour and welfare, studying the effects of housing systems on pig welfare. He subsequently took up a position as a Behavioural Scientist at the Scottish Agricultural College in Edinburgh, continuing his work on pig behaviour and welfare, and then moved to Bristol University Vet School where he is now Professor of Animal Behaviour and Welfare and Head of the Bristol Animal Welfare & Behaviour Group, and has previously been Deputy Head of School (Research). He was lead of the BBSRC and UFAW Animal Welfare Research Network for 6 years.
His current research interests are in the study of cognition and emotion in domestic animals, with a view to using this information to improve animal welfare. Together with Dr Liz Paul, he developed a novel ‘cognitive bias’ approach to the assessment of animal emotions which draws on theory and findings from human psychology and cognitive neuroscience. He and Liz received the 2013 inaugural International Society for Applied Ethology Creativity Award, and the Alice Richie Trust Memorial Fund Award for their work in this area. Mike was awarded the UFAW Medal in 2014 for his contributions to animal welfare science, and the RSPCA/BSAS Award for Innovative Developments in Animal Welfare in 2015.
Mike also works on more applied animal welfare issues including developing welfare indicators and monitoring systems that can be implemented under field conditions, and better understanding the relationship between housing and husbandry procedures and the health and welfare of farm, laboratory, companion and zoo animals.
Dr. Jaume Fatjó – Understanding the human-animal bond and its impact on animal welfare and people’s quality of life.
Born in Barcelona in 1969. He has a degree in veterinary medicine and a PhD from the Autonomous University of Barcelona. He is a Diplomate of the European College of Animal Welfare and Behavioural Medicine. Since 2010 he is an assistant professor at the Department of Psychiatry and Forensic Medicine at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. In 2012, he became the director of the Affinity Foundation Chair for Animals and Health at the Department of Psychiatry and Forensic Medicine (Autonomous University of Barcelona) and PSMAR. He is the director of Ethogroup, a behavioural medicine referral service based in Barcelona. Since 2023 he is the head of behavioural medicine and animal welfare at VetPartners Spain. His research interests are focused on understanding the relationships between people and animals, the development of tools to assess canine and feline behaviour, as well as the comparative study of human psychiatric disorders and behaviour problems in companion animals.

Pisa is a small city, everything is easily reachable on foot. The congress venue, the CNR Auditorium is at about 2 km from the city centre.

We have organised shuttle buses (one ride in the morning and one return in the afternoon).
Buses will also be available on October 20th in the evening for the Social Dinner which will take place in the countryside.
More details will be provided as the congress dates approach.

We suggest the Garibaldi V1 or Pratale-Parcheggio stop, both 2 minutes away on foot.

CNR can be easily reached with rented bikes and scooters (for details, see “transports In Pisa”).
Taxi
The city has a cooperative taxi service, which means a network of taxis across the city are available to book on just one phone number: +39 050 541 600. There are also taxi stands in prominent locations, such as Pisa’s main train station and Piazza del Duomo. All fares are on the metre and a ten minute journey shouldn’t cost more than 10€. Add on a few more euros for the excess fare on Sundays, public holidays and overnight (between 22:00 and 06:00).
